2024 Suzuki Jimny 4x4 wait times cut: But you have to be quick

Suzuki reckons this sort of cut in wait times for the ever-popular Jimny won't happen again, so you better act fast.

Great news for fans of Japan’s tiniest off-road icon.

Suzuki Australia has secured a substantial production allocation of the perennially popular Jimny small 4x4, resulting in far-shorter delivery times.

Centred around the recently-released Jimny XL five-door wagon, the unexpected increase in supply includes models fitted with an automatic transmission as well as the standard manual versions.

All the vehicles in question were built in India in December 2023 and January 2024, and are said to be just reaching Australia now.

Suzuki Australia is expected to make an announcement regarding the boost in supplies over the next few days.

If you're not choosy about transmission, you may only end up waiting a few weeks for a new Jimny.

According to one dealer source that CarsGuide contacted, wait times for the Jimny XL are now quoted as “six to 12 weeks” for the auto, and as soon as just “three to six weeks” for the three-pedal models.

These are down considerably from the six-to-nine-month timeframes Suzuki Australia has previously stated for the exact same versions.

All the Jimnys in question are the newly-released five-door wagon model known as the XL.

However, the reprieve from waiting for such a long time is only expected to last for a maximum period of about three months at the current order rate, our source added.

Furthermore, with its sourcing out of Japan, buyers wanting the Jimny GLX three-door version may still have to wait up to 12 months or even longer if they are picky with colour and specification.

Sadly for fans of the Jimny GLX 3DR auto, wait times remain long.

For the majority of last year, the auto version had been the subject of a stop-sale in Australia due to delays stretching as long as 18 months.

Whatever the case, it means that readers seeking a Jimny XL will have a very limited window to take advantage of the extra shipments.

With a boost in fresh buyer numbers anticipated, the news is also good for Suzuki Australia, which is already enjoying a stellar start to the year with a 17 per cent sales increase to the end of February.

The current Jimny has been a resounding success since launching in 2019.

Additionally, and aided by the XL version, Jimny registrations are up 25 per cent over the same period last year, to 1319 units, to make it the brand’s best-seller year-to-date.

In fact, except for the Ignis city-sized SUV (down 21 per cent), there are double-digit jumps across the entire Suzuki range, with the Vitara small SUV, Swift supermini (now in runout ahead of the next-gen redesign later on this year) and S-Cross small crossover delivering rises of 29.4, 30.5 and 106 per cent year-on-year respectively.

The teenage Byron filled in the agonising years leading up to getting his driver's license by reading the words of the leading motoring editors of the country and learning what they look for in a car and how to write it.
