I bought a new 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC 250d last week.
When I placed the order in August last year the towing capacity for this vehicle was 2500 kg.
I checked Mercedes' official web page approx. 4 weeks ago prior to delivery to confirm the specs and the towing capacity was still 2500kg, but on delivery in March 2017 the capacity had been reduced to 2000kg, as per a slip added to the owner's handbook stating that the notification superseded what is in the handbook.
It goes on to say that if towing limits are not observed the warranty may be voided.
The dealer was not aware of the change and has tried to obtain clarification from Mercedes Australia, but no explanation has been forthcoming.
Can you assist in obtaining an official explanation from the company, and if it has dropped to 2000kg why did they not advise customers on the waiting list of the change, or even their own dealers.
We asked Mercedes-Benz for an explanation and a spokesman told us that the GLC SUV tow rating has always been 2000kg, which is what is reflected in the company's technical documentation delivered with the car, and on the Australian website.
The overseas rating is 2500kg, which is what you may have seen on the German site.
The company doesn't adopt these numbers due to our local towing rules. As a result the towing rating for Australian-delivered cars is less.
