2022 Citroen C4 confirmed for Australian launch: New Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Skoda Scala and Peugeot 308 rival to ride high like an SUV

The all-new C4 is a high-riding small hatchback-cum-sedan.

Citroen Australia has locked in a new model for its line-up, with the third-generation C4 small car set to bring its SUV twist on the traditional hatchback and sedan body-styles to local showrooms from mid-November.

Revealed in June last year, the latest C4 is a segment-busting hatchback-cum-sedan that rides high like an SUV, which has been the body-style of choice for Australian new-vehicle buyers for years now.

Measuring 4360mm long (with a 2670mm wheelbase), 1800mm wide and 1525mm tall, the C4 is considerably taller than most of its rivals, partly due to its 156mm of ground clearance. Cargo capacity is on par, though, at 380L.

The general manager of Citroen Australia, Kate Gillis said: “We're delighted to be expanding the Citroen range in Australia, and the C4 is the perfect addition.

“The versatility, unrivalled comfort and original design of the Citroen C4 will no doubt appeal to the discerning Australian consumer.”

The C4 will be offered in a single variant locally, with it to be motivated by a 114kW/240Nm 1.2-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, with drive sent to the front wheels via an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Keyless entry, push-button start and a flip-up head-up display will be among the C4’s standard inclusions, while its suspension will have Citroen’s signature Progressive Hydraulic Cushion that provide a “magic carpet ride”.

Advanced-driver assist systems in the C4 will extend to autonomous emergency braking (with pedestrian and cyclist detection), lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control (with stop and go functionality), driver attention alert, blind-spot monitoring and surround-view cameras.

Local pricing and full specification details will be confirmed at the C4’s launch. It will go tyre to tyre with the Mazda3, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Skoda Scala and Peugeot 308, among others.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
