China's toughest SUV yet! New Great Wall Tank 600 will use big V6 to lure you out of your Toyota LandCruiser Prado

The Haval Tank 600 could be China's toughest SUV yet.

China has just taken its most obvious shot yet at Japan's most legendary nameplate, with the new Great Wall Tank 600 revealed with the Toyota LandCruiser Prado in its sights.

These appear to be the first official images of the GWM Tank 600, ahead of the Chinese answer to the Prado's official reveal at the Chengdu Motor Show later this month.

The details remain a little thin on the ground for now, but we do expect the Tank 600 to be a petrol-powered rival to the diesel Prado, packing a new 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 that will produce a sizeable 260kW and 500N, and which will be paired with a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

We're also expecting the Tank 600 to be confirmed as roughly Prado-like in its dimensions, with seven seats and a footprint that stretches around five-metres in length and two-metres in width.

The Tank 600 is about the same size as a LandCruiser Prado.

It will also share the Toyota's penchant for off-roading, and should deliver a body-on-frame architecture, along with low-range 4WD as well as a sizeable wading depth, and off-road-ready approach and departure angles.

And, like the broader Tank range, it's being studied for Australia. As reported last month, the smaller Tank 300 is currently in Australia for validation and testing, pending a decision on its future, with the brand keen to expand its line-up in this market.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
