Holden and HSV who? Mega GMSV Corvette Z06 revealed - but will it come to Australia?

The Corvette Z06 has been revealed in all of its fire-breathing glory.

GMSV could be set to make a performance splash in Australia, with parent company GM finally revealing the new - and seriously fire-breathing - Chevrolet Corvette Z06 for the very first time.

GMSV - the company formed when Holden (and thus HSV) finished its run in Australia - has already trademarked the Z06 nameplate for our market. Unfortunately, that's as much as we've got so far, with the brand's local representative saying that right-hand drive production has not been confirmed for the Z06.

Still, we can hope, right?

So what are we hopinh for? The Z06 is a special-edition version of the Corvette, with a track-focused equipment list and a thumping V8 engine that will elevate it to the top-tier of supercars when it comes to power.

It's official launch is happening in the USA on October 26, so there's a little bit of guess work for now, but given a camouflaged version of the Z06 has been filmed - officially and unofficially - pounding out laps of the Nurburgring, there are plenty of educated guesses doing the rounds.

The Z06 is the first of several hi-po Corvette variants, with US media reporting the track-focused performance variant will pack the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine in the brand's history.

The 5.5-litre V8 is an off-shoot of the brand's racing donk, and is tipped to make around 450kW, deliver a 9000rpm redline, and produce a deep an operatic soundtrack that is bound to delight your neighbours.

You'll also get a aster-changing version of the Corvette's eight-speed Tremec dual-clutch automatic, as well as wider bodywork, sportier Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tyres, the option of lightweight carbon-fibre wheels and some clever aero, including what appears to be a wing that magically appears from the bodywork.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
