Honda Civic 'Red Edition' pack 2017 pricing and spec confirmed

Honda Australia has introduced a limited 'Red Edition' pack for some variants in its Civic hatch range, with the cosmetic option paying homage to the soon-to-be-released Type R performance model.

Available on the VTi, VTi-S, VTi-L and VTi-LX variants, the 'Red Edition' pack costs $2498 (including fitment) and is restricted to 228 vehicles – equalling the power output of the fifth-generation Type R. This option is not available on Civic sedans.

The 'Red Edition' pack consists of black 17-inch alloy wheels, red front and rear under spoilers, red side skirts, and 'Red Edition'-branded floor mats.

Exterior paint colour options are limited to four – 'White Orchid', 'Sonic Grey' and 'Crystal Black' pearlescents, and 'Lunar Silver' metallic.

There are no changes to existing Civic hatch pricing or specification levels.

According to Honda Australia director Stephen Collins, 10th-generation Civic customers have enjoyed adding more style to their vehicles, as seen by the preceding 'Black Pack' and 'Orange Pack' that both sold out.

“Customers love the boldness of the Honda Civic sedan and hatch, and the eye-catching ‘Red Edition’ is an attention-grabbing styling statement for Civic customers looking to add some individuality to their cars,” he said.

“The 'Red Edition' is the perfect way to celebrate the arrival of the Honda Civic Type R.”

More than 420 orders have already been placed for the Type R, which officially goes on sale later this month priced from $50,990 before on-road costs.

Additionally, more than 6500 potential customers have registered their interest in the hot hatch, which packs a 2.0-litre 'VTEC' turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that punches out 228kW of power and 400Nm of torque.

Shipments of the six-speed manual-only Type R started arriving last month, with Honda Australia expecting more than 495 examples to land on Aussie shores before the end of the year.

Civic sales have been on the mend this year, with 10,270 units sold to the end of September, representing a 133.3 per cent improvement over the 4403 sales the Japanese model tallied during the same period in 2016.

This 2017 haul places Honda sixth in the small-car class for overall sales, trailing the Toyota Corolla (28,665), Mazda3 (25,457), Hyundai i30 (21,103), Kia Cerato (14,671) and Volkswagen Golf (13,126).

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
