MG Australia has launched an all-new model into the dwindling small sedan segment with the MG5, lining up against four-door versions of the Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Hyundai i30 and Kia Cerato.
But the new MG model undercuts all rivals, opening with the entry-level Vibe for $24,990 drive-away and extending to the top-spec Essence for $28,990.
Both versions use the same 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine to motivate the front wheels, but outputs vary between grades.
The Vibe has 84kW/150Nm on tap, while the Essence boasts 119kW/250Nm.
Transmissions also vary between grades, with the base car fitted with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), while the top-spec MG5 has a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
As such, the Vibe returns a fuel economy figure of 5.7 litres per 100km, while the Essence is slightly thirstier at 5.9L/100km.
Standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels, synthetic leather seats, four-speaker sound system and a 10.0-inch multimedia system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
Stepping up to the Essence nets buyers a surround-view monitor, sunroof, six-speaker sound system and synthetic leather-trimmed steering wheel.
The MG5 sedan sports a boot capacity of 401 litres.
As with all MG models, the MG5 comes with a seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.
