Your Holden Commodore could be on the road even longer! GMSV set to honour Holden service and spare parts beyond required 10-year mark

Under Australian law, car makers must supply spare parts and servicing for models for up to 10 years after production ceases.

GMSV (General Motors Speciality Vehicles) has revealed that it will carry Holden-built and badged vehicle spare parts and service capabilities past the minimum-by-Australian law 10-year period.

While no set time frame has been announced, it is believed that the 1.6-million strong fleet of Holden-badged vehicles currently on Australian roads is seen as an extremely lucrative resource for GMSV dealers, particularly given the relatively small sales volumes of the new, high-end Chevrolet-branded Silverado trucks and Corvette sports car range in Australia.

The news provides further peace of mind as well as a wider choice for existing and future Holden owners, fans and followers, who may have had to otherwise search elsewhere for supply, support and expertise surrounding parts and servicing.

“From our point of view, we always say it will be at least 10 years,” according to GMSV Australia and New Zealand managing director, Marc Ebolo.

“It’s a part of our business going forward, so we will always come back to that standard line there that says that we fully intend to support the servicing and parts of all the 1.6 million Holden vehicles on the road for at least 10 years as required.

"We have a very strong focus on the Holden after-sales business.”

GMSV says there are still over 200 outlets throughout Australia and New Zealand that can carry out the work as required.

As reported earlier this year, General Motors spare parts division ACDelco is taking over as the branded supplier of new parts for Holden vehicles from the old Holden dealer sites.

“It will be a big part of what we do,” Mr Ebolo said. “ACDelco is this growing brand with quite a few areas that it is starting to look into.”

Acquired by GM in 1918, ACDelco has also operated under other similar names including AC-Delco and AC, and is a known brand associated with Holden through its dealer network in Australia and New Zealand right from the beginning.

Under Australian law, car companies must continue to supply spare parts and servicing for models for up to 10 years after production ceases, but are not required to after that time frame.

Byron started his motoring journalism career when he joined John Mellor in 1997 before becoming a freelance motoring writer two years later. He wrote for several motoring publications and was ABC Youth radio Triple J's "all things automotive" correspondent from 2001 to 2003. He rejoined John Mellor in early 2003 and has been with GoAutoMedia as a senior product and industry journalist ever since. With an eye for detail and a vast knowledge base of both new and used cars Byron lives and breathes motoring. His encyclopedic knowledge of cars was acquired from childhood by reading just about every issue of every car magazine ever to hit a newsstand in Australia. The child Byron was the consummate car spotter, devoured and collected anything written about cars that he could lay his hands on and by nine had driven more imaginary miles at the wheel of the family Ford Falcon in the driveway at home than many people drive in a lifetime. The teenage Byron filled in the agonising years leading up to getting his driver's license by reading the words of the leading motoring editors of the country and learning what they look for in a car and how to write it. In short, Byron loves cars and knows pretty much all there is to know about every vehicle released during his lifetime as well as most of the ones that were around before then.
