The fourth-generation MX-5 retains traditional sports car simplicity, while offering some creature comforts in its mid-spec GT variant for a little extra cash over the base Roadster or RF.
From $48,640 before on-road costs as a Roadster soft-top, or from $53,140 in retractable hard-top RF guise, the GT can also be had with a six-speed automatic transmission replacing the six-speed manual for $1500 more.
The same 135kW/205Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine powers the rear wheels in every variant of the MX-5.
The GT adds black leather seats over the base model, as well as those seats being heated, plus a Bose nine-speaker sound system and keyless entry.
A GT Black Roof edition is available in automatic RF only, with tan Nappa leather upholstery and, as you’d expect, a black roof for an extra $1020.
Mazda’s five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty with five years of roadside assistance applies, as well as the same servicing costs with intervals every 12 months or 15,000km. They cost between $447 and $638, averaging out at about $544 each up to seven years.
The MX-5’s five-star rating from ANCAP in 2016 expired in December 2023, but the sports car still features front and side airbags, alerts for driver attention or potential collisions, Mazda’s Smart City Brake Support, seatbelt pretensioners, side-impact door beams.
