Ask Smithy Xtra Transmission valve on Golf worth fixing?

My 2004 VW Golf has just been diagnosed with a transmission valve body problem, which causes the car to jerk, and I have been told it will cost $4000-plus to have it fixed. No wreckers are interested in buying it, what do you think I should do, get a new car or get it fixed?

I would certainly get it repaired. Fixed it would be worth around $15,000, so it’s well worth fixing, but if you don’t it’s value would be severely affected.
