Blowing a fuse

BEFORE Christmas, the airconditioner in my 1999 Golf worked intermittently. When I had it assessed at the dealership, I was told the compressor was blowing smoke and would cost $2800 to replace (not including labour). I said not to fix it and the following week, a different problem occurred that was traced to a loose fuse. My mechanic (not the dealership) replaced the fuse and tried the airconditioner -- it worked. My mechanic charged me nothing for his help and the aircon is still working beautifully. Just a word of advice, check your fuses.

NO mechanic is infallible and everyone can make mistakes. Cars are complex machines and problems are sometimes not easy to trace. It always pays to check the basics, and in your case the dealer mechanic doesn't appear to have done that.
