    BMW 116i coolant expansion bottle crack

    My 2013 BMW 116i is currently in for its 40,000 km service. The dealer has told me that the coolant expansion bottle has a minor crack and that a warning light would have been glowing on my dashboard. No light has been glowing, so they believe they have caught it early, but they still want to replace it. They are telling me the replacement part is approx. $800 plus labour. I don't think it's right that the car should be deteriorating like this, in such a short time, what do you think? Should they be replacing it free of charge?

    Your car is out of warranty, so you would have to make a goodwill claim for BMW to replace the bottle free of charge. I think they should come to the party with the cost of replacing the bottle, and by all means try that, but I doubt you will be successful. There are many plastic components used in the cooling system on BMWs, and like the expansion bottle on your car they all eventually give trouble. In my view it's poor engineering.
