Toyota Corolla: Stalling manual

My 2009 Toyota Corolla six-speed manual hatchback has generally been solid and reliable, except that it frequently stalls, which is both frustrating and dangerous. The clutch feels inconsistent and often fails to take-up. I have raised this issue with the dealer when getting the car serviced and they have can't seem to solve the problem. I have driven a lot of manual vehicles over 30 years and have never had the issues I do with this Corolla. Do you have any idea what the cause of the problem could be and how it could be fixed? Would you consider winding up the rev counter at idle?

If it has got progressively worse over time it could be that the clutch is worn and needs to be replaced. If it hasn't, and it appears to be a characteristic of the car then perhaps a change of technique is required. It might be that you simply need to raise the revs a little when using the clutch and make sure you feel the point of engagement so that you've got enough revs on board at the critical moment the clutch takes up.
