Volkswagen Golf 2011: Oil consumption

I am the second owner of a 2011 VW Golf with 60,000km on the clock. I loved it until a couple of weeks ago when the catalytic converter light came on. Now, after two rounds of investigation the dealer can't explain the issue other than to advise the motor will need to be stripped to check the bores. Failing this it will need a brand new motor. It seems that for a luxury brand the VW vehicle range has some inherent issues. Have you ever heard of this catalytic converter issue with the Golf?

I assume that the cause of the catalytic convertor light coming on is that engine is burning excessive oil and that has contaminated the converter. That’s the only reason I can think of that the dealer wants to check the bores. Have you observed it using oil? It would seem to be an extreme move to install a new engine, but hopefully they will do it as a goodwill gesture.
