Stalling volvo

WE HAVE owned a 1993 Volvo 940 GLE since 1999 which had done 116,000km when bought. It generally drove well until a couple of months ago when the car began to stall for no apparent reason. The stalling is intermittent. In general, the car stalls within 5km of home. There is no warning that the car is about to stall other than the light indicating ``emission problems'' briefly flashing, then all power cuts out. The car restarts perfectly a few minutes later and sometimes drives perfectly for days, but other times it stalls again within a few minutes. Our mechanic replaced the air-flow meter and checked the computer without finding the cause of the problem. This is a safety concern because the car has stalled on a main highway and in the middle of intersections, among other places.

VOLVO specialist John Johnson, of Voldat Automotive, recommends you start by cleaning the throttle butterfly. If there's a build-up it may not be properly returning to idle and sending an incorrect signal to the computer. If that doesn't work, try resetting the idle switch. Beyond those, you could check the idle motor to make sure it's operating correctly.
