I'm looking for a second hand medium-sized SUV in the $15,000-$20,000 price range that is genuinely capable off road and will be still with me past 250,000 km. It has to have decent space to stuff full of camping gear. I’m happy to look at anything from 2010 onwards. I've narrowed it down to the Subaru Forester, Mitsubishi Outlander and maybe the Subaru Outback. Long-term reliability is my most important criteria. What are your thoughts on these? Or should I consider something else? Oh, and can CVTs be trusted yet for that many km?
All three are capable off road if you aren’t planning to go rock climbing, and they are reliable enough to get you to 250,000 km. CVTs are quite reliable now, but how far they will go is anybody’s guess at this moment in time. I would go for a Subaru, either the Forester or the Outback.
