2016 Renault Megane revealed

New Renault Megane breaks cover ahead of Frankfurt.

Renault has released the first official images of the new fourth-generation Megane hatch, following the appearance of leaked photos earlier this week.

The new small hatch will make its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show next week, but these first images give a good taste of Renault’s latest entry in the ultra-competitive small car segment.

Featuring proportions that are essentially upscaled from the current Clio light hatch, the Megane brings sharpened detailing similar to the recent Renault Espace people mover and Talisman mid-sizer.

These details include the new corporate C-shape headlight front and a similar multi-faceted look to the taillights.

These first images give a good taste of Renault’s latest entry in the ultra-competitive small car segment.

Compared to the current third-generation Megane, the new model is 25mm lower overall, with a 28mm longer wheelbase, 47mm and 39mm wider front and rear tracks respectively with a shorter rear overhang.

The new Megane is the latest Renault-Nissan Alliance family member to ride on the Common Module Family (CMF) architecture, joining the Espace and Talisman, plus the Nissan X-Trail, Qashqai and Euro-spec Pulsar.

Renault has also confirmed that the new Megane model lineup will be topped by a new sports-flavoured GT variant, continuing from the GT-Line and GT-220 versions of the current generation.

The Megane GT scores sportier front and rear styling and unique 18-inch alloys, along with the availability of the ‘Iron Blue’ colour seen in these first photos.

Renault has managed to keep a lid on mechanical details for now, but all will be revealed at the Frankfurt motor show on September 15th.

The first Australian models are expected to hit showrooms after June 2016.

Back when all cars burned fuel and couldn't drive themselves, Mal was curing boredom by scanning every car his parents' VB Commodore drove past. His childhood appreciation for the car world exploded during a three-year stint in the US, and serious questions were asked when he spent a good chunk of his uni career perfecting lap times at Wakefield Park. Mal got his big break scooping the VE II Commodore, before a stint at Overlander magazine and kicking off his online career with The Motor Report in its heyday. These days he's exactly the same height as Michael Schumacher and uses his powers for good at the helm of CarsGuide's editorial team. Mal proudly shuns brand allegiance and counts three young kids, an EH Holden, NA MX-5, KE20 Corolla, W116 Mercedes-Benz and the world's most versatile Toyota Echo among his personal stable. He also craves a Subaru Vortex, so get in touch if you know where to find one.
