2021 Jeep Gladiator pricing and specs detailed: Sport S lowers high cost of entry to fledgling Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger rival

The new entry-level Sport S grade has lowered the Jeep Gladiator’s starting price.

Jeep Australia has confirmed it will lower the high cost of entry to the Gladiator 4x4 dual-cab pick-up, with its new range-opening Sport S variant due in showrooms this month.

Priced from $65,450 plus on-road costs, the Sport S is $10,000 and $11,000 more affordable than the Gladiator’s existing Overland and Rubicon variants respectively, with the pair unchanged for MY21.

For reference, compared to entry-level automatic 4x4 dual-cab pick-up variants of the rivalling Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, the Sport S is still $16,660 and $16,760 dearer respectively.

Unlike its turbo-diesel rivals, the Sport S and the rest of Gladiator range are powered by a 209kW/347Nm 3.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol V6 engine, which is mated to an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Standard equipment in the Sport S includes heavy-duty Dana front and rear axles, underbody skid plates, dusk-sensing LED lights, black fender flares, 17-inch alloy wheels, a black removable hardtop and keyless entry.

Inside, a 7.0-inch touchscreen multimedia system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, a nine-speaker Alpine sound system, a 7.0-inch multifunction display, dual-zone climate control, push-button start and black cloth upholstery feature.

Advanced driver-assist systems extend to autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors.

Options-wise, the $2450 Comfort and Technology package adds remote start, an alarm, privacy glass, an 8.4-inch touchscreen multimedia system, satellite navigation and a headliner.

And the $2950 Lifestyle Adventure package bundles in a 240A alternator, a 700A battery, a roll-up tonneau cover, a spray-in bedliner, adjustable tie-down points on rails, an auxiliary switch bank, a wireless Bluetooth speaker and a rear lockable under-seat storage bin.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
