2022 Nissan X-Trail timing finally confirmed! Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Mitsubishi Outlander to hit Australia before the end of the year

The X-Trail was revealed in June 2020 and is finally coming to Australia.

Nissan Australia has finally revealed launch timing for its long-awaited new-generation X-Trail medium SUV.

The fourth-generation family friendly high-riding wagon will land on Australian shores in late 2022 – but that’s all the detail we are getting from Nissan Australia for now.

Any information relating to pricing, specification and powertrains is being held back until closer to launch.

The confirmation comes more than 18 months after the reveal of the new X-Trail, albeit in US-market Rogue guise. That model has been on sale in the US for some time, while many other markets, including Australia, have continued to sell the ageing current model.

The outgoing X-Trail has soldiered on in Australia since mid-2014 and is one of the oldest models among its medium SUV rivals, alongside the equally aged Jeep Cherokee.

What we do know is that, like its predecessor, the new model will be sourced from Japan.

Powertrains for the Australian market are yet to be confirmed, but expect the 135kW/245Nm 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine from the US market Rogue – and the mechanically related Mitsubishi Outlander – to be front and centre.

Given Nissan’s global electrification push, and a promise to increase electrified offerings in Australia, it’s likely to be offered with Nissan’s ePower series hybrid powertrain as well.

Nissan is yet to confirm it but the new X-Trail could also creep up in price. The current model is one of the more affordable options in the segment, ranging in price from $30,665 for the base ST front-wheel drive manual to $46,115 for the Ti all-wheel drive auto.

But given the extra tech and new underpinnings, it’s unlikely to stay that low.

It will almost certainly drop the manual option and it should also be offered with a third row in some variants.

The new-gen X-Trail will likely be the last new model launch in what is shaping up to be the biggest year for Nissan in a long time.

Before the X-Trail, the new model rollout includes the latest Qashqai small SUV, a new Z coupe, and the new-gen Pathfinder large SUV.

Calling out the make and model of every single car he saw as a toddler might have challenged his parents’ patience, but it was clearly a starting point for Tim Nicholson’s journey into automotive journalism. Tim launched the program, Fender Bender, on community radio station JOY 94.9 during completion of his Master of Arts (Media and Communications). This led to an entry role at industry publication GoAuto, before eventually taking the role of Managing Editor. A stint as RACV’s Motoring Editor – including being an Australia’s Best Cars judge – provided a different perspective to automotive media, before leading him to CarsGuide where he started as a Contributing Journalist in September 2021, and transitioned to Senior Editor in April 2022, before becoming Managing Editor in December 2022.
