2022 Porsche 911 GTS price and features: Sporty new grade ups the ante to take on Audi R8 and Mercedes-AMG GT

The new GTS grade slots in between the S and Turbo variants in the 911 range.

Porsche has revealed the 992-series 911 sports car’s new GTS grade, which is due in Australian showrooms in the first quarter of next year.

Six GTS variants are on offer, with the Coupe and Cabriolet body-styles available with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter of which is dubbed 4. A Targa body-style with AWD can also be had.

All versions come with an eight-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission as standard, although the GTS Coupe can instead be optioned with a seven-speed manual for no extra cost.

Speaking of which, pricing starts at $314,800 plus on-road costs for the manual GTS Coupe and reaches $366,900 for the 4 GTS Targa (see full pricing table below).

Powering the new GTS grade is a 353kW/570Nm version of the 911’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat six-cylinder petrol engine, which makes it 22kW/20Nm more potent than its predecessor.

As a result, the automatic 4 GTS Coupe can sprint from a standstill to 100km/h in just 3.3 seconds, 0.3s quicker than its forebear. Top speed is yet to be quoted.

The new GTS grade also features specifically tuned adaptive suspension, 20/21-inch alloy wheels and high-performance brakes from the next-up Turbo grade, and a standard sports exhaust system.

Styling-wise, the new Audi R8 and Mercedes-AMG GT rival gets the Sport Design package as standard, although its version of the body kit is enhanced with ‘GTS’ decals and darkened LED headlights and tail-lights.

Inside, Race-Tex microfibre upholstery is prominent throughout, while the latest version of Porsche’s PCM multimedia system can also be found, with it offering wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto support.

Interestingly, an optional Lightweight Design Package is available for the first time, with it bundling in rear-axle steering, lightweight side and rear glass, carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) bucket seats, and a lightweight battery. It also deletes the rear seats.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
