2023 Mercedes-AMG C43 detailed: More power, less cylinders for latest BMW M340i, Genesis G70 Sport and Audi S4 Avant rival

The Mercedes-AMG C43 is now powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, but still punches out 300kW/500Nm.

Mercedes has shown off the first of its new-generation C-Class-based AMG models, with the C43 breaking cover and expected in Australian showrooms in the first half of 2023.

Fans of displacement however, might be disappointed with the removal of the 3.0-litre V6 engine, replaced with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder.

It’s not just any 2.0-litre engine though, it’s the same as the one powering the new AMG SL 43, and features a 48-volt-assisted turbocharger to help eliminate lag.

In the 2023 C43, the result is a 300kW/500Nm output, which is 3kW more but 20Nm less than the model it replaces.

However, another 10kW is available at brief times thanks to the belt-driven starter generator, and with drive sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission, the new C43 sedan can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in just 4.6 seconds, while fuel economy is pegged between 8.7-9.1 litres per 100km.

Buyers opting for the wagon will need 0.1s longer to hit the landmark triple-digit speed, while fuel consumption also takes a slight hit, returning 8.8-9.2L/100km.

Other AMG-related features include rear-axle steering, adaptive dampers, drive-mode select, uprated brakes and sports exhaust.

Of course, being an AMG, the C63 also sports a unique bodykit with extra air intakes, bespoke front grille and wheels ranging in size from 18 to 20 inches to further differentiate itself from the standard C-Class range.

Inside, the C43 is equipped with leather-appointed sports seats, red seat belts, red contrast stitching, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and Mercedes’ latest MBUX multimedia technology.

Australian pricing and specs will be revealed closer to the car’s on-sale date, but for reference, the outgoing C43 in sedan, Estate, coupe and convertible form cost $113,576 before on-road costs, $116,176, $128,800 and $149,900 respectively, though there is no word yet on if the latter two body styles will make a return.
