2023 Subaru Impreza with STI modifications debuts in Japan, will we see it here in Australia?

The Impreza with STI modifications look a little more aggro than the Impreza launch car shown last year.

Subaru has stepped up its 2023 Impreza game at the Tokyo Auto Salon, bringing a modified version of its new hatchback to the stand.

Instead of the relatively standard version of the new Subaru Impreza revealed in late 2022 at the LA Auto Show, Subaru has rolled out a hotter-looking Impreza with styling elements from STI to give the car a visual sporting edge.

While the brand hasn't said anything about mechanical specifications, the show car is likely to have one of the standard drivetrains from the new Impreza, perhaps the top-spec RS with its 136kW/197Nm and continuously variable transmission (CVT).

While that’s not enough to set the streets on fire, the Impreza is the less performance focused of Subaru’s two main passenger cars, the other being the 202kW/350Nm WRX.

Subaru hasn’t published a full list of the modifications made to the show car, but it’s clear a new STI bumper is fitted, while new side skirts are flanked by black STI alloy wheels, and the rear apron surrounds a twin-exit exhaust pipe.

Press images also show an STI-specific spoiler above the rear window.

The new Subaru Impreza is coming to Australia, although exact timing and specifications aren’t confirmed, with Subaru Australia most recently telling CarsGuide that “more details for the Australian market” will be shared “in due course”.

When it arrives, it’s not unlikely some STI modifications will be available for the Impreza, given Subaru previously announced WRX owners will be able to select various visual elements to buy for their cars.
