Chery has put a price-tag on its latest and largest model so far, the seven-seat Tiggo 8 Pro Max SUV.
Starting from $41,990 drive-away for the entry-level Urban grade, the Tiggo 8 Pro Max sits above low-cost seven-seat rivals like the Mahindra XUV700 and LDV D90 which have comparable drive-away pricing, but below more mainstream offerings like the Nissan X-Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander, VW Tiguan Allspace, and outgoing Mazda CX-8 once you add on-road costs to those models.
The three-variant range is offered with a single engine, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit, providing 180kW of power and 375Nm of torque.
The entry Urban and mid-grade Elite are front-wheel drive, while the Ultimate is all-wheel drive. All drive the wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, with the Ultimate scoring a Borg-Warner all-wheel-drive system. Fuel consumption is rated at 8.1L/100km for front-wheel-drive variants, or 8.7L/100km for the all-wheel drive.
Measuring 4720mm long, 1860mm wide and 1705mm tall, the Tiggo 8 is more of a mid-sized seven-seat SUV in the same vein as the Nissan X-Trail, Honda CR-V, and Mitsubishi Outlander, rather than a mid-to-large size SUV like the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, or Toyota Kluger.
Like most challenger brands, the Tiggo 8 range is keenly priced and highly specified. The entry-level Urban starts from $41,990 drive-away and includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, dual 12.3-inch screens for the instrument cluster and multimedia touchscreen respectively, synthetic leather interior trim, built-in sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, eight-speaker audio system, a wireless phone charger, a 360-degree parking camera, interior ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, as well as heated and ventilated front seats.
The mid Elite grade is priced at $43,990 drive-away and adds a power tailgate, heated exterior mirrors, a built-in dashcam, third-row air vents with independent fan speed control, illuminated door sills, and a retractable cargo blind.
Finally the top-spec Ultimate is the only all-wheel-drive version, priced at $47,990. It adds 19-inch alloy wheels, a fragrance system for the climate control, puddle lamps, a panoramic sunroof, the option to choose brown synthetic leather interior trim, a 10-speaker Sony-branded audio system, and tinted rear windows.
All variants get “18 driver assistance systems” for the active safety suite including auto emergency braking, lane assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear auto braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and driver monitoring.
It is also rated to tow specifically for the Australian market, rated at 1300kg braked or 750kg unbraked.
The Tiggo 8 Pro max is available in eight colours including white, silver, blue, violet, two greys, green and black.
Like other Chery models, the Tiggo 8 Pro Max is offered with a seven-year warranty, seven-years of capped-price servicing, and seven years of roadside assist (the roadside assist is topped up on a yearly basis as long as the vehicle is serviced at a Chery dealer).
Chery will have a battle in front of it in the coming year or more as it tries to establish itself against some of Australia’s most entrenched brands, but also a litany of new Chinese automakers confirmed to arrive in Australia before the end of the year.
