2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric car handed ANCAP safety score, but does it do better than the other Ford Mustang?

The Ford Mustang might only be a three-star car according to ANCAP, but the Mustang Mach-E is a fiver.

ANCAP has announced the latest round of safety results, awarding the incoming Ford Mustang Mach-E, popular GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid, and the full-electric versions of the Genesis GV70 and G80 with top marks.

The peak safety body had already deemed the Mustang Mach-E EV a five-star car for New Zealand last year when it went on sale, but has now confirmed the same score applies to Australian-delivered versions due to arrive before the end of 2023.

The caveat, however, is that it applies to all variants baring to top-spec GT.

The Mustang Mach-E scored well in the adult occupant protection, child occupant protection and safety assist tests, notching scores of 92, 88 and 82 per cent respectively, while the vulnerable road user protection test yielded a 69 per cent score.

As a reminder, the Ford Mustang coupe and convertible were awarded a two-star rating back in 2017, which was revised to three stars after the facelift was introduced in mid-2018 with more active safety equipment.

Meanwhile, the Jolion Hybrid carries over the petrol-powered small SUVs maximum rating and individual scores after ANCAP undertook two additional tests and found "comparable safety performance" between the two.

Likewise, the electric versions of the Genesis GV70 and G80 also undertook similar additional testing.

As such, the Jolion Hybrid has a 90, 84, 64 and 92 per cent score for the adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, vulnerable road user protection and safety assist tests respectively.

Likewise, the electric versions of the Genesis GV70 and G80 also undertook similar additional testing, wherein ANCAP was largely satisfied the EV version's safety credentials match their petrol-powered counterparts.

However, the new tests revealed that the G80 Electrified's automatic door locking mechanism did not release post-crash, which Genesis has been made aware of and is implementing a fix.

ANCAP Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg said the latest results expand the pool of safe electrified vehicles that are available in Australia.

"With these new results, there are now over 100 battery electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen models rated by ANCAP which hold a five-star ANCAP safety rating – providing plenty of choice to consumers across a range of vehicle brands, models and price-points," she said.
