2024 Lexus LBX could be brand's most affordable new model

The new Lexus LBX is expected to be related to the Toyota Yaris Cross.

Lexus is teasing another new model for its line-up, this one called the LBX, which is expected to be a light crossover related to the Toyota Yaris Cross.

And while this model is yet to be confirmed for Australia, it is believed the LBX will be one of three all-new vehicles landing in local showrooms within the next 18 months, alongside the Toyota Prado-related GX and LM luxury people mover.

Though Lexus has not divulged any details aside from the two teaser images that show a close-up of a headlight and the rear lighting signature, speculation is pointing a Toyota Yaris Cross-like SUV that will slot in below the UX.

This means it will be built on Toyota’s TNGA GA-B platform, which is also shared with the latest Yaris and overseas Aqua (known as the Prius-C here before its discontinuation last year), and could be the first premium light SUV in Australia.

This might also make it the most affordable vehicle in Lexus Australia’s line-up, filling the space left by the removal of the CT hybrid hatchback in 2021.

Expect to see hybrid powertrains on the LBX as well, as Lexus Australia’s hybrid sales mix is one of the heaviest in the country, accounting for nearly half its sales (46.3%) in 2022 thanks to models like the NX, RX, UX and LS offering electrified options.

For reference, the Yaris Cross is available with either a 1.5-litre petrol three-cylinder engine outputting 88kW/145Nm, or a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain with 85kW/141Nm at its disposal.

Pricing for the Yaris Cross also kicks off from $27,840 before on-road costs and extends to $35,840, so expect the LBX – if it is indeed Yaris Cross-related – to sit north of the Toyota’s light SUV.

Lexus will reveal the LBX in early June at an event in Milan, Italy, and states it “looks forward to sharing more information then”.
