Mercedes-Benz has confirmed local pricing and specification for its CLE Coupe, an all-new two-door model taking the place of the out-going C- and E-Class coupes.

An initial two-level line-up consists of the CLE200 and CLE300 4Matic, both powered by a turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with ‘mild-hybrid’ assistance from an integrated starter generator (ISG).

According to its maker the new four-seater is appreciably larger, internally and externally, than the now discontinued C-Class Coupe (including an extra 60L in the boot) and boasts more front legroom and a roomier back seat than the E-Class Coupe it also supersedes.

At $103,900, before on-road costs, the CLE200 Coupé delivers 150kW/320Nm to the rear wheels via a nine-speed auto transmission, while at $124,900, before on-roads, the CLE300 4Matic Coupé ups outputs with 190kW/400Nm going to all four wheels. On both models the ISG is able to add an extra 17kW/205Nm boost when required.

That puts the newcomer in the same price ballpark as the Audi S5 ($120,300, 3.0L, 260kW/500Nm) and BMW 430i ($109,700, 2.0L, 190kW/400Nm).

Both variants feature suspension and steering systems tuned for “direct handling and agility” and roll on 19-inch AMG alloy rims shod with high-performance Goodyear Eagle F1 rubber.

Standard features on both models include the latest iteration of the three-pointed star’s ‘MBUX’ multimedia system, managed through an 11.9-inch (portrait) multimedia screen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, 64-colour ambient cabin lighting, Burmester surround sound audio (with Dolby Atmos), a head-up display, heated front seats with memory function, a panoramic sliding sunroof, built-in nav (with augmented reality display), wireless device charging, digital exterior lighting and a ‘Parking Package’ with 360-degree camera view. Interior trim is synthetic leather in the CLE200 and genuine hide in the CLE300.

Standard active (crash-avoidance) safety tech includes ‘Active Lane Keeping Assist’, ‘Active Brake Assist’, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign assist, active cruise control and Merc’s ‘Pre-Safe’ accident anticipation and preparation system.

The CLE Coupe will be in local showrooms from next month and a soft-top Cabriolet version of the car, unveiled globally in February this year with European sales commencing this month, is scheduled for Australian arrival in July.

The new CLE comes with a boot capacity of an extra 60L.
