2024 Volkswagen ID.3 GTX revealed as VW shows off its Golf-GTI successor ahead of the MG4 XPower rival's international launch

Volkswagen has revealed its ID.3 GTX - the electric successor to the Golf GTI.

Volkswagen has revealed the 2024 ID.3 GTX electric hot hatch, as essentially the EV version of its renowned Golf GTI.

The ID.3 GTX will sit atop the ID.3 range, and sports 'Volkswagen's most powerful electric drivetrain', with VW saying it is intentionally the successor to nameplates like GTI, GTD, and GTE.

While you might assume the 'X' part of the GTX' moniker is for all-wheel drive, like the GTI before it, the ID.3 GTX will remain a 2WD affair, only this time driving the rear wheels.

It arrives in two variants internationally, the standard GTX and more powerful GTX Performance. Other features exclusive to the Performance grade include adaptive chassis control.

The standard GTX produces 210kW, while the performance variant ups this to 240kW, although both put out 545Nm of torque. The motor is a new unit which also features new thermal management features.

A large 84kWh battery delivers a claimed 600km driving range. Volkswagen didn't reveal charging figures or efficiency numbers at this time, but for reference the ID.4 GTX (which has a slightly smaller battery) can charge at 11kW on the slower AC standard or 135kW on a fast DC unit.

On the outside, the ID.3 GTX scores a unique front bumper with air intakes, diamond-style running lights, and gloss black highlights, which extend to its rear diffuser, setting it apart from the rest of the ID.3 range. It also scores 20-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the GTX features sport seats clad in both fabric and synthetic leather, with decorative stitching for both the seat designs and steering wheel. There are GTX specific patterns and designs throughout the cabin. VW also says the GTX will launch with a newly developed generation of its multimedia software suite, which is also being rolled out for the ID.4 and ID.5.

Volkswagen has high hopes for its ID.3 GTX, as it says 20 per cent of ID.4 and ID.5 models sold in Europe are already GTX variants.

The ID.3 GTX was revealed in tandem with the ID.7 GTX Tourer, although Volkswagen Australia has ruled the latter out for an Australian launch for the time being.

The ID.4 and ID.5, along with their GTX versions, are set to arrive in Australia in July or August of this year after significant delays, having launched in Europe in 2022. Expect the ID SUVs to be priced close to their primary rival, the Tesla Model Y, although pricing will be announced closer to their on-sale date.

Volkswagen Australia has also stated that the ID.3 will become available in Australia over the course of 2024, targeting a sub-$60,000 starting price, although it will arrive after the ID.4. CarsGuide has sought an update on ID.3 timing as well as asking if Australia will see the GTX version at the same time. The ID range is set to be further fleshed out with the arrival of the ID.Buzz van range, also said to arrive in the next 12 months.
