2024 Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer revealed: Sleek five-door electric car adds wagon practicality to Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 challenger

The ID.7 Tourer shares most of its exterior dimensions with the fastback version.

Volkswagen’s electric car assault continues with a new Tourer version of its mid-size ID.7 five-door hatch emerging overnight.

Although an unlikely starter for Australia in the short term, the new wagon variant of the ID.7 fills another EV market niche for the German giant with its pure-electric range also featuring the upcoming Polo-sized ID.2 as well as the current Golf-sized ID.3 hatch, larger ID.4 SUV, coupe crossover ID.5, the full-size, three-row ID.6 SUV and ultra-cool ID.Buzz van.

The ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.Buzz (passenger and Cargo) are scheduled to arrive in local showrooms this year, and VW Australia has told CarsGuide, “The focus for Volkswagen continues to be on ID. 4, ID. 5 and ID. Buzz for the Australian market.

“Following those models and the ID. 3 we will naturally look to the business case of the ID. 7 as a further extension of the fully electric range.”

The sleek five-seater would surely stand up as a compelling rival to broadly similar hybrids and EVs sitting in the around $60-80K bracket like the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 6, Peugeot 508 GT PHEV Fastback, Polestar 2 and even the Volvo EX30 small SUV.

Boasting a range of up to 685km while offering accommodation for five people and cargo space ranging between 605 litres (all seats up) and 1714 litres (rear row folded), the newcomer combines traditional wagon design with a leading-edge electric powertrain.

With available features like a 15-inch multimedia screen.

Offered with a choice of a 77kWh or 86kWh lithium ion battery, the ID.7 is powered by a single 210kW/545Nm permanent magnet synchronous motor driving the front wheels only. Claimed 0-100km/h acceleration is an impressively rapid 6.5 seconds.

Combine that with available features like a 15-inch multimedia screen, an AR head-up display, combined microsuede/leather trim, self-parking, a panoramic glass roof, 14-speaker 700-watt Harman Kardon audio as well as up to 21-inch alloys and the ID.7 Tourer becomes a strong premium EV proposition.
