BMW 840i 2019 pricing and specification announced

BMW has added the 840i to its line-up.

BMW is making the all-new 8-Series more affordable, introducing the six-cylinder 840i range.

Following a successful resurrection of the 8-Series badge with the twin-turbo V8 M850i earlier in 2019, the German brand is expanding in the hope of widening the appeal of the big coupe and convertible with the 840i range.

Also available in both hard-top and soft-top forms, both 840i models will be powered by the same 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine, making 250kW of power and 500Nm of torque, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Both will ride on 20-inch M Sport alloy wheels and get an M Sport differential, M Sport brakes as well as Integral Active Steering.

Pricing for the 840i starts at $202,900 for the Coupe and $217,900 for the convertible (both prices exclude on-road costs); that’s $70k less than its bent-eight sibling.

However, they still come loaded with the type of luxuries you expect from a European grand tourer. Standard equipment includes BMW’s laser headlights, soft-close doors, BMW Display Key with keyless entry and ignition, wireless smartphone charging pad, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, 10.2-inch infotainment display, M Sport leather-wrapped steering wheel, BMW Individual extended leather trim and BMW ‘Carbon Core’ transmission tunnel.

Unique elements for the 840i Coupe are BMW Gesture Control, BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite and a 16-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system. The 840i Convertible instead gets the choice of a black or silver soft-top, BMW air collar and a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo.

If you prefer an even sportier take on the car BMW is offering an M Sport Plus options package. It adds 20-inch M Sport light alloy rims with performance tyres, larger M Sport brakes (395mm front discs compared to the standard 374mm), M Sport seats and belts, BMW Individual high-gloss shadow line and a rear spoiler for the Coupe. That will at $3900 to the price of the Coupe and $3400 for the Convertible.

The Bavarian brand has also announced another new option for both the 840i and M850i - M Sport seats. For an additional $2600 you get a pair of M Sport bucket seats with adjustable backrest width and illuminated M logo.

The 840i Coupe and Convertible will hit showrooms in September.

Steve has been obsessed with all things automotive for as long as he can remember. Literally, his earliest memory is of a car. Having amassed an enviable Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection as a kid he moved into the world of real cars with an Alfa Romeo Alfasud. Despite that questionable history he carved a successful career for himself, firstly covering motorsport for Auto Action magazine before eventually moving into the automotive publishing world with CarsGuide in 2008. Since then he's worked for every major outlet, having work published in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Drive.com.au, Street Machine, V8X and F1 Racing. These days he still loves cars as much as he did as a kid and has an Alfa Romeo Alfasud in the garage (but not the same one as before... that's a long story).
