BYD is gearing up for a massive new-model rollout that should cement its place in Australia's top 10 car brands.
Since launching the Atto 3 compact SUV in mid-2022, BYD has steadily added new EV and PHEV models including the Dolphin hatch, Seal sedan, the Sealion 6 and Sealion 7 SUVs, and, of course, the smash hit Shark 6 ute.
But that’s just the beginning for the automotive powerhouse. After recently transitioning from private distributor EVDirect to the factory-backed BYD Australia, the company is laser focused on expanding its line-up and its sales volumes.
To the end of May this year, BYD has sold 15,199 cars in Australia, which is a 95 per cent improvement on the same period in 2024. That sales figure has pushed BYD ahead of popular brands like BMW, Volkswagen and fellow Chinese brand Chery, and it’s snapping at the heels of big names like Subaru (15,300), Isuzu (16,731), Nissan (17,136) and MG (17,778).
Given what’s coming from BYD this year, there’s a good chance it will end the year ahead of many of those carmakers.
BYD recently confirmed the Atto 2 electric small SUV would hit Australian shores by the end of 2025 to take on the MG S5 and Kia EV3, while the Sealion 8 large plug-in hybrid seven-seat SUV will land early in 2026.
While timing is yet to be confirmed, BYD is planning to roll out more grades of the Shark 6 ute, as well as a bunch of other new models.

BYD Australia Senior Manager Product Planning & Pricing Sajid Hasan told CarsGuide the more powerful 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid version of the Shark 6 was likely.
“So we'll be able to see a Shark 6 with a three-and-a-half tonne towing capacity with that. And to support our aspirations to grow the BYD brand and increase our volume, I think it's absolutely necessary that we expand the Shark line-up, and that is something that my team has actually been working on.”
That 2.0-litre powertrain could be the same unit found in the Fangchengbao 8, which includes a dual-motor set up and power and torque outputs of 550kW/760Nm. Either way, the powertrain will ensure a better towing capacity of 3500kg, up from the current version’s 2500kg figure.

Hasan said other model grades of the existing Shark 6 are also likely.
BYD is also working on a larger ute to sit above the Shark 6, which could also make it Down Under at some point.
“Would we introduce a full-size pick-up? Everything's on the table. I think there's a strong demand for full size pick-ups. There's huge demand for the medium-sized pick-ups. We're pretty good with the one variant as it is. It's only upwards from here.”

Another model that is being considered and highly likely is the Sealion 5 five-seat medium SUV. This model, called the Song Pro in China, has a plug-in hybrid powertrain and in terms of dimensions, sits somewhere between the Atto 3 and the Sealion 6.
Hasan said he would “love to see” the Sealion 5 come to Australia, and denied that another SUV of a similar size to other BYD models would not add complexity to BYD’s local line-up.
“The Sealion 6 is definitely positioned above the Sealion 5, as a slightly larger vehicle with a slightly higher position for specs, powertrain, interior comfort, and technology. So I think there would be a unique enough and differentiated enough customer between the two models that they would be able to coexist.”

The Sealion 6 currently starts at $48,990 before on-road costs so expect the Sealion 5 to kick off from just under $40,000.
BYD offers a number of sedan models in China, including the e7, the Seal 06, Qin Plus and the striking Han sedan.
Hasan said the company is open to adding more sedans beyond the popular Seal in Australia, if they are appropriate for the market.
@carsguide.com.au 2026 BYD SEAGULL This new electric car could be the most affordable EV in Australia, if it gets the green light. The 2026 BYD Seagull EV is smaller than the Dolphin and the MG4, but it has a spacious cabin and exciting performance. “There's a few sedans that we're studying, and I'd love to talk about it, but we don't have any announcements to make at this stage, but just watch the space.”
BYDs premium arm Denza will also launch before the end of 2025, likely with the Fangchengbao 5 - renamed as Denza B5 - before a slew of other models are added to the roster.
