Car Theft Awareness week

A string of thefts and vandalism attacks on custom cars in Tasmania has prompted a Hobart car club to start a public awareness campaign; to stop theft and encourage people to report car crime.

Garage Tas member Tegan Worsley said there had been a sharp increase recently in the number of cars; particularly Japanese imports; being vandalised, stolen, stripped, burnt or broken into.

She said the thieves appeared to be getting more brazen, with many thefts occurring in public places in broad daylight.

“I had my car stolen last year, it was parked in a public place with an immobiliser and an alarm and they still took it,” Ms Worsley said.

She said in some cases police believed thieves had attended car events at Baskerville Raceway and other venues and picked out the cars they wanted, then followed the owners home so they could later steal the vehicles.

Ms Worsley, of Brighton, said despite spending a lot of money on their cars many car club owners didn't have adequate security devices or insurance.

Which is why she and the other 50 members of Garage Tas have organised a Car Theft Awareness Cruise this Saturday, not only to raise awareness among car owners but to encourage members of the public to be more aware of crimes in their neighbourhoods.

Drivers from around the state will come together for the cruise, with southern drivers leaving Hobart's Hunter St at 10am and meeting North and North-West drivers at Campbell Town.
