A new electric ute from the newest entrant to the Australian market has been spotted in the wild.

Chinese brand JAC, which launched its diesel-powered T9 workhorse in Australia this month, has been working on an electric version for some time.

Now it’s been spotted undisguised ahead of its official reveal at the 2024 Beijing motor show this week.

Overseas publication CarNewsChina has shown spy shots of the JAC T9 EV and revealed details of the zero-emissions dual-cab ute.

The T9 EV will reportedly be powered by two electric motors that produce 230kW and 518Nm sent to all four wheels.

Its motors are fed by a circa-88kWh LFP battery that delivers a driving range of up to 500km.

The driving range is estimated via the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), which is much more generous than the widely used Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), so expect closer to 400km if it arrives Down Under.

LFP batteries aren’t as energy dense as conventional lithium-ion cells, but they do away with rare and expensive materials such as nickel and cobalt and have a lower risk of fire.

The electric T9 is based on the diesel-powered model and its dimensions are the same, which puts it head-to-head with top-selling dual-cabs such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.

It has the same basic styling as the diesel-powered T9, but features a closed-off front grille and flashy aerodynamic alloy wheels.

Black cladding around the wheel arches, headlights and where the grille would be remain, as do the roof rails and the bonnet hump.

There is a big JAC badge up front and the company’s name is embossed on the tailgate, too.

Jac has just launched the diesel-powered version of the T9 in Australia.

JAC wouldn’t confirm if or when the electric ute would arrive in Australia at the launch of the diesel-powered model.

The Chinese carmaker did confirm a plug-in hybrid version of the T9 would hit our shores in 2025. That model would line up against the coming BYD Shark plug-in hybrid ute and the future Ford Ranger PHEV.

In Australia the JAC T9 is initially fitted with a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that makes 125kW and 410Nm matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels.

JAC claims it has a one-tonne payload and a braked towing capacity of 3500kg.

Prices start at $42,663 (before on-road costs) for the two-tier T9 range.
