Off the menu: Toyota Camry hybrid sedan orders no longer being taken as Toyota catches up to backlog

Toyota has temporarily stopped taking orders for its hybrid Camry sedan, with wait times for the electrified versions of its evergreen model “remaining above two years”.

While Toyota says it has seen “substantially improved supply since May across most of Toyota’s new-vehicle range, including Camry hybrid”, it says there is still “extraordinary demand” for the hybrid sedan.

In fact, Toyota says 90 per cent of Camry customers order the hybrid drivetrain, making this stop-sale a significant event for the country’s new sedan market segment.

“I want to assure all Toyota customers that we are doing everything possible to increase supply for Australia and to expedite delivery of vehicles as they arrive,” Toyota Australia Vice President Sales and Marketing, Sean Hanley said.

“Our global production teams have consistently adopted countermeasures that have improved the supply of components affected by global shortages, such as semiconductors.

“Throughout this journey, we are particularly humbled that our local customers have maintained their trust in Toyota and remained loyal to our brand.”

Along with the Camry hybrid on pause, Toyota Australia has also placed an order hold on the V8-powered LandCruiser 70 Series.

While a turbo-diesel four-cylinder LC70 is on the way with the updated model, Mr Hanley confirmed the V8 will rejoin it at some point.

“And of course you will question - and I’d expect it in case you're wondering - you're not too late for the V8,” Mr Hanley told journalists at a recent media preview of several new Toyota models including the updated 70 Series.

“Although our order pause remains in place for now, while we work through with the customers that have been waiting.”

Toyota Australia has also placed an order hold on the V8-powered LandCruiser 70 Series.

The updated LandCruiser 70 launches in November, so it’s possible more information regarding the V8’s availability will emerge in coming weeks.

While many of Toyota’s models are plagued with infamously long wait times, it seems like some models and variants are still taking too long for some customers. CarsGuide was told by a potential RAV4 customer this week that, according to the dealer, there would be a two-year wait for the mid-size SUV.

A spokesperson for Toyota Australia confirmed to CarsGuide there are no other models currently on an order hold.
