After two years in the local market Mitsubishi has upgraded its already popular Outlander mid-size SUV with additional standard convenience features, updated safety tech and fresh colour options across the range.

At the same time, the success of the previously Outlander LS-based 'Black Edition' has led to its installation as a stand-alone model grade.

All Outlander grades will now feature auto 'dusk-sensing' headlights as well as an LED (rather than halogen) rear fog light, while a new rear seat alert function can be calibrated to remind an exiting driver (via a display message or sounding the horn) that the rear seat is still occupied.

The colour palette for ES, LS, Aspire and Exceed grades replaces 'Titanium' metallic with 'Graphite Grey' metallic, while the range-topping Exceed Tourer's two-tone paint treatment is now offered in two new combinations - Graphite Grey with a 'Black Mica' roof and 'Black Diamond' with 'Sterling Silver' roof - alongside another two existing choices.

Previously a variant based on the Outlander LS, the new Outlander Black Edition stands alone in the updated model range as a front-wheel drive, non-hybrid grade, distinguished, as the name implies, by black 20-inch alloy wheels, with the same shade applied to the grille, front and rear lower bumpers, door mirrors as well as the B- and C-pillar trims. Premium paint is standard.

Inside, the front pillar covers, headlining, gearshift surround as well as the synthetic suede and synthetic leather seat trim continue the blacked out theme.

Speaking of which, pricing for the rest of the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander range is up by between $500 and $800 across the line-up.

As a small boy James often sat on a lounge with three shoes in front of him, a ruler between the cushions, and a circular drinks tray in his hands. He would then play ‘drivings’, happily heading to destinations unknown for hours on end. He’s since owned many cars, raced a few, and driven (literally) thousands of them at all points of the globe. He’s steered around and across Australia multiple times, spent time as an advanced driving instructor, and had the opportunity to experience rare and valuable classics here and overseas. His time in motoring journalism has included stints at national and international titles including Motor, Wheels and TopGear, and when asked to nominate a career highlight, James says interviewing industry legend Gordon Murray, in the paddock at the 1989 Australian Formula One Grand Prix was amazing, especially as Murray waived away a hovering Ayrton Senna to complete the conversation. As Deputy Editor, James manages everything from sub-editing to back-end content, while creating written and video product reviews, as well as the weekly 'Tools in the Shed' podcast.'
