In 1974, Hyundai unveiled a concept car penned by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro that would go on to heavily influence the iconic DMC Delorean created by the same designer.
That concept car was the Hyundai Pony Coupe, a much more sporting and sleek relative to the Pony, the brandās first international model. But the Pony Coupe story doesnāt start and end in 1974.
In 2022, the brand unveiled a new concept, called the Hyundai N Vision 74, a coupe with clear styling cues linked to the Pony Coupe, as well as its name referencing 1974.
Now, South Korean newspaper Money Today reports Hyundai will use its N Vision 74 concept as a launching pad to finally create a production version of the Pony Coupe.
āPony is the first vehicle that introduced Hyundai Motor to the global market. As Hyundai Motor Company stands out in earnest in the global market, the restoration and mass production of the Pony Coupe will be of great significance to both Hyundai Motor and consumers,ā an industry insider said according to the report.
According to the insider, Hyundai will hold a āPony Dayā later this month on the 27th, where it will announce the plan to create a production model based on the Pony Coupe and the N Vision.Ā
It's not at all off the cards, with Hyundai Executive Technical Advisor and former Head of R&D (after leaving BMW M) Albert Biermann telling us late last year a halo sports car could work very well for the brand.

"Weāre selling ā¬60,000 EVs now, which I think many of our sales people could not even imagine three years ago - and we cannot get enough of those cars. So I think weāre getting closer to such a point," Biermann said.
"With N weāve built a reputation that people will trust such a car if it comes from Hyundai N, they will think this is a nice car to have.
"When I joined Hyundai this was a supercar concept and very modular - which could be combustion or hybrid or pure EV - but that was not the right timing.
"You saw the N Vision 74, everyone [went] crazy for the design, of course now thereās a lot of talk of such a car in a limited [volume].ā

The Money Today report also says Hyundai plans to reveal the production model that day, too, which has apparently been designed by Fabrizio Giugiaro, the son of the original Pony Coupeās designer.
The main question is what will power the production version of the Pony Coupe/ Vision 74, given the original was built deep in combustion times, and the recent Vision concept was a hydrogen-powered study.
Stay tuned for more as details become clearer closer to the signalled date later this month.
