Pricing and details of the SsangYong Rexton 2019 model range have been announced, with the Korean brand's big family four-wheel drive arriving with aggressive pricing and plenty of equipment.
As a competitor to the likes of the LDV D90, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Isuzu MU-X, the all-new seven-seat SsangYong Rexton will have its work cut out for it in the hardcore off-roader segment - but not all grades are as hardcore as others.
There are three models in the Rexton line-up, with the entry-grade EX 2WD focusing on people who don't need all-wheel drive, but still need seven seats and strong towing capability.
The EX uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 165kW of power and 350Nm of torque. Fuel use for this six-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive model is claimed at 10.4 litres per 100 kilometres, and it will have claimed towing capacity of 750kg for an unbraked trailer, and 3000kg for a braked trailer. SsangYong Australia says it is working to increase that figure to 3.5 tonnes on all grades.
The entry-level EX model comes with an 8.0-inch touchscreen media system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus there's a reversing camera, dual-zone climate control, auto emergency braking (AEB) with forward collision warning (FCW), auto high-beam headlights and lane departure warning.
The next model up the Rexton range is the ELX AWD, which uses a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 133kW of power and 420Nm of torque, and is teamed to a seven-speed automatic transmission sourced from Mercedes-Benz.
Rexton AWD models have the same towing capacity as the petrol model, with 750kg unbraked towing and 3000kg braked towing capacity. Fuel consumption for diesel AWD models is claimed at 8.3L/100km.
ELX models come with nine airbags (EX: seven airbags), plus the addition of blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist.
Above the ELX is the Ultimate grade, which adds desirable items such as heated and ventilated front seats, 20-inch wheels, a 360-degree camera, a sunroof, and a power tailgate. The fine nappa leather trim on this model is quilted, and looks very luxurious.
As with all models in the new SsangYong range, the Rexton is offered with driveaway pricing across the line-up, with the EX 2WD listing at $39,990, the ELX AWD at $46,990, and the Ultimate AWD coming in at $52,990.
All SsangYong models will be sold with a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty program, plus seven-year roadside assist cover, and a seven-year capped price servicing plan.
