Swoopy SUV alert! 2024 Genesis GV80 SUV Coupe debuts and is ready to battle BMW X6, Mercedes GLE Coupe and more

The GV80 Coupe has a sloping rear roof line familiar from its rivals.

Genesis has joined the swoopy coupe-style SUV brigade with the reveal of its new GV80 Coupe large SUV.

The new body style follows the concept that previewed the model's development back in April this year.

Genesis - Hyundai Group's luxury arm - now joins other premium players with coupe-SUVs, including Audi (Q3 and Q5 Sportback), BMW (X4 and X6) and Mercedes-Benz (GLC and GLE Coupe).

More mainstream brands have also jumped on the bandwagon, including GWM Haval with the H6 GT and Renault with its Arkana.

It's the first time Genesis has used the 'coupe' tag for one of its SUV models, but you could argue the GV70 and GV60 are already pretty sleek and swoopy.

Back to the GV80. The new Coupe features a unique rear design, with the sloping roofline and a spoiler, and it comes with the choice of 20- or 22-inch alloy wheels and 13 exterior colours. It is unclear whether the lowered roofline has any impact on luggage space.

As well as uncovering the Coupe, Genesis has revealed a mid-life update of the regular GV80 SUV.

The differences are hard to spot but include a redesigned 'crest' grille, slightly tweaked headlights, larger front air intakes and a new chrome trim.

Inside the crystal shift-by-wire gear shifter has been redesigned, as have the device charging pad and console.

In global markets, under the bonnet of the standard SUV is the 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine offering 224kW/422Nm, or the 3.5-litre turbo V6 with 279kW/530Nm.

Genesis Australia recently dropped the 2.5L petrol grades leaving only the 3.5L models and the 3.0-litre diesel grades.

The GV80 Coupe, however, will get an exclusive powertrain - a version of the 3.5-litre V6 with a 48-volt electric supercharger, offering up power and torque of 309kW and 549Nm.

Expect to see the updated GV80 SUV and the GV80 Coupe in Australian Genesis showrooms in the second quarter of 2024.

Managing Editor
Calling out the make and model of every single car he saw as a toddler might have challenged his parents’ patience, but it was clearly a starting point for Tim Nicholson’s journey into automotive journalism. Tim launched the program, Fender Bender, on community radio station JOY 94.9 during completion of his Master of Arts (Media and Communications). This led to an entry role at industry publication GoAuto, before eventually taking the role of Managing Editor. A stint as RACV’s Motoring Editor – including being an Australia’s Best Cars judge – provided a different perspective to automotive media, before leading him to CarsGuide where he started as a Contributing Journalist in September 2021, and transitioned to Senior Editor in April 2022, before becoming Managing Editor in December 2022.
