Volkswagen's electric car influx! VW ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.Buzz all in production for Australia next year

VW is bringing almost half a dozen electric cars to Australia by 2025.

After a long delay on EVs for Australia, Volkswagen is finally opening the floodgates.

Within the next year and a half, VW Australia will bring just about its entire range of electric cars to the country, from ID.3, 4, and 5 plus the ID.Buzz and its tradie-spec Cargo version.

Volkswagen Australia’s Director of Passenger Vehicles Michal Szaniecki confirmed that the timing for these models was to ensure Australia gets the latest versions of each one.

“We can confirm the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5 will [all] both start production and go on sale next year, so our message for customers thinking about switching to a BEV is this – we’re here in 2024, and here in a big way.”

Volkswagen Australia had been a strong critic of a lack of EV policy in Australia, and continued to criticise state governments discussing charges for electric cars on the road.

In turn, the Volkswagen ID.3 hatch will launch in Australia with, VW says, “a pricing target under $60,000 in order to maximise national and state-based electric vehicle incentives”.

The VW ID.4 and ID.5 small SUVs will follow with no pricing ranges indicated by VW Australia yet, though the brand says both will be available in specifications offering more than 500km of electric driving range. Expect them to start above the $65,000 mark.

Volkswagen Australia hopes they’ll become additional options for buyers who would traditionally consider a Tiguan.

The Buzz people-mover and van are both approved for Australia.

In addition to the ID.3, 4, and 5, Volkswagen will bring both versions of the Kombi-inspired ID.Buzz to Australia - the passenger van and the ID.Buzz Cargo.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Director Ryan Davies said the Buzz people-mover and van are both approved for Australia, meaning production for Oz-spec cars will begin at the end of 2024 for 2025 deliveries.

“The ID.Buzz is a people mover that stops traffic, people stop, stare and smile. It’s an incredible blend of style and function that will capture the imagination of Australians – and is reflected by our ambitious sales volumes,” he added.

“We expect the ID.Buzz Cargo to sell at least as well, and it’s incredibly appealing for sole traders who want to reduce their emissions in the most fun way possible. This is a proper, from the ground up tradies’ BEV – not a tacked on reverse engineering of an existing diesel vehicle.”

Pricing and exact specification for the Volkswagen ID range is yet to be confirmed, but should be announced for each model closer to its local launch.
