WRX heats up: 2024 Subaru WRX TR special edition revealed, Australia to get its own version

Subaru has revealed a more focused version of its WRX sedan, dubbed the TR - and it's set to come to Australia... sort of.

While the TR is specifically designed for the US market and features revised suspension and steering for a sharper drive, as well as more track-focused Bridgestone Potenza S007 tyres and beefier brakes, a similar version is all but confirmed for the Australian market.

Publicly available documentation from the Australian Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts includes a new variant approved for the current Subaru WRX range, called the SE, that wears the same wheels as the US-spec TR.

Unlike the TR, the SE features an STI-style wing, but when it does (almost certainly) launch along with the 2024 model range for the sedan, we expect it to feature a very similar list of improvements to the TR.

While this won't mean any engine changes - its turbocharged 2.4-litre flat-four engine to remain at 202kW/350Nm, paired only to a six-speed manual gearbox - it should mean a set of Brembo brakes (six-piston front callipers, two-rear) with larger pads and discs, stiffer springs and revised damper tunes, a steering rack adjust for "better body control and steering response".

Unlike the TR, the SE features an STI-style wing.

The TR also wears a unique set of 19-inch multi-spoke wheels finished in satin grey, while a set of Recaro sports seats feature inside with electric adjustment finished in black and grey 'Ultrasuede' with red stitching.

As mentioned, all but confirming a version of the TR the 'SE' variant under the WRX's approval listing by the government, which feature images of a WRX wearing the same wheels as the US-spec TR, and with a performance data logger mounted in the window.

The TR also wears a unique set of 19-inch multi-spoke wheels finished in satin grey.

When CarsGuide asked a Subaru Australia spokesperson for an explanation of the variant approval in the government documents, they declined to comment on the variant specifically but said the TR is part of the line-up for the US, and that "more information about the MY24 Subaru WRX Australian specification... will be released in due course".

Given the clues, stay tuned for confirmation of the Australian-specification WRX SE in the near future, wing and all.
