Porsche smashes Nurburgring record with outlaw racer

By Iain KellyIain Kelly

After 35 years Porsche have blown their own lap record of the Nurburgring Nordschleife apart. They took their specially created 919 Evo hybrid endurance racer to Germany to reset the record set by the late, great Stefan Bellof in 1983.

Bellof set his time, faster than F1 cars of the time, in a monstrous Porsche 956 Group C racer, which owned the World Endurance Championship in the '80s. But it was no match for 35 years of progress and Timo Bernhard was able to demolish the time to reset the lap record from 6min 11sec to 5min 19sec!
