Underneath all of those Bentley exterior trimmings is a humble Volkswagen Touareg — seriously.
The Bentayga became Bentley’s first ever SUV and, while the signature Q12 powertrain was available, the Crewe carmaker also built twin-turbo V8 and even plug-in hybrid V6 variants.
The line-up currently starts at $395,800 for the Bentayga (hybrid) and ranges through to $611,200 for the range-topping Bentayga Mulliner EWB.
There are eight standard paint colours for the Bentley Bentayga including 'Beluga' (black), 'Glacier White', 'Onyx' and 'Dark Sapphire'.
Many cars have leather upholstery but not like this. The Bentley Bentayga's leather upholstery is taken only from cattle that graze at high altitudes so their hides aren't blemished by insect bites.
That's a standard feature. But if you want something even more special there's Bentley's in-house customisation division Mulliner which will personalise the leather in terms of colour, embroidery, the lot.
The Bentley Bentayga 0-100km time ranges from 4.5 seconds for the V8 variant to 5.3 seconds for the V6 hybrid. Top speed is between 270-290km/h.
The Bentley Bentayga is available in five- or seven-seat configuration.
The Bentley Bentayga is available with two powertrains - a 3.0-litre V6 petrol-hybrid making 340kW/700Nm and a 4.0-litre turbo-petrol V8 producing 404kW/770Nm.
The entry-grade Bentley Bentayga comes standard with matrix LED headlights, air suspension, a fixed rear spoiler, panoramic glass roof, roof rails, a hands-free tailgate, proximity key, leather upholstery, a 10.9-inch media display with sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Bentley Signature sound system (with digital radio) and four-zone climate control.
Keep in mind Bentley then adds further features in packages.
At the top of the range is the Azure grade which comes with all the entry-grade features along with several packages as standard. These include the 'Front Seat Specification' which adds heated and ventilated seats, the 'Sunshine Specification' which adds electric rear sun blinds and 'The Touring Specification' which adds safety tech like 'Night Vision' and adaptive cruise control.
The Bentley Bentayga's boot space ranges from 387 litres for the four seat configuration in the V6 hybrid to 484 litres in the five-seat V8.
The Bentley Bentayga's range is approximately 721km for the V6 hybrid and 745km for the V8 petrol.
