The passenger side guard on my 2009 150-series Toyota Prado has cracked behind the original equipment battery. This was an issue on the 120-series Prado and I have found a few other instances of the problem with the current model. My car is used for touring around Australia through such locations as the Red Centre and the Kimberley. It is fitted with aftermarket accessories such as a bullbar, second battery, air compressor etc, which Toyota has blamed for the problem. None of the accessories are fitted anywhere near the problem area and Toyota refuses to explain how they have caused this issue with deflective generic statements such as 'defects caused by the fitment of non Toyota approved parts'. The cost to repair it is going to be significant and I was wondering what my options are for chasing this up? I believe Toyota at least have to explain how the fault was caused rather than brush me off. Potential buyers should be aware that the Prado is not cut out for touring in Australian outback conditions.
You need to have an independent engineer look at the car to determine the cause of the cracking; you also need to research and talk to other owners who have had the same problem, and armed with all of that information you need to negotiate a resolution with Toyota. If you stick to your guns you might have a chance of getting some satisfaction.
