Hyundai Santa Fe 2002: Whine in the diff?

MY 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS has done 22,000km and has developed a differential whine between 60km/h and 80km/h. The dealer says the whine is not too severe and some Sante Fes have it. I contacted Hyundai and they appear genuinely ready to rectify the problem. Both the dealer and Hyundai tell me that most vehicles, even those of other makers, have some diff whine. But I have owned other makes and have not had this problem. Can you offer any advice?

MOST vehicles have a diff whine, it's the nature of the type of gears used in diffs, but you rarely hear it. Most car makers manage to isolate the noise so it doesn't travel through the car. They use all sorts of techniques to ensure it doesn't become a problem. The problem with the Santa Fe could lie in the diff itself, it could also lie in the suspension or body which can act as amplifiers. I would take up Hyundai's offer and have them fix the problem.
