Volkswagen has updated its city-sized T-Cross SUV with upgraded tech and safety, a new R-Line flagship model and a revised pricing structure including a national drive-away offer on the entry-level model.

Improvements start with the entry-grade Life now featuring LED headlights, wireless device charging and VW’s configurable ‘Digital Cockpit’ as well as adaptive cruise control, ‘Lane Assist’ (with active centering), ‘Side Assist’, ‘Rear Cross-Traffic Alert’ and a ‘Proactive Occupant Protection System’.

But the flip side is the Life’s starting price rises by close to 10 per cent, from $30,990 to $33,990, before on-road costs, with national drive-away pricing set at $34,990.

The mid-grade Style ($37,490 MSRP) has also been given a spec boost with the addition of Matrix LED headlights (with adaptive high-beam), synthetic leather on the dash and doors, an illuminated grille strip, ‘Digital Cockpit Pro’ (with map displays) and wireless ‘App-Connect’ as standard.

Then the R-Line ($40,990 MSRP) steps up to become a formal T-Cross model grade boasting R-Line exterior and interior styling, 18-inch alloy rims (up from 16-inch on Life and 17s on Style), a driving profile selection feature (including Sport mode), dark tinted side and rear window glass and Beats premium audio.

All three are powered by the same 85kW/200Nm 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine driving the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch auto transmission.

It’s worth noting Mazda’s five-grade CX-3 range kicks off at $26,950 for the entry-level Sport before topping out with the fully-loaded Akari at $38,770. And the four-tier Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid ranges from $30,900, before on-roads, for the GX to the Urban AWD at $39,880.

Volkswagen Group Australia’s Passenger Vehicles head of product Michelle Rowney is bullish on the now more highly-specified T-Cross’s sales prospects.

Noting its performance, efficiency and packaging attributes, Ms Rowney said, “Combine these virtues with style and features upgrades plus sharp entry drive-away pricing, and the upgraded Volkswagen T-Cross blends youthful design, latest technology and strong value like no other compact SUV.”

The new T-Cross line-up is scheduled to hit Volkswagen showrooms in mid-July.
