7000-plus Teslas recalled for hazardous software fault

The Federal Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication and the Arts has issued a safety recall notice impacting 7301 examples of the Tesla Model Y sold new in Australia in 2025.

It confirms that in examples of the popular pure-electric SUV, “Due to a software issue, the driver side window’s automatic protection system may not operate as intended and result in the window closing with excessive force on any obstruction such as a body part.”

In a worst case scenario the department says, “If a body part is in the window space when the driver's side window is closing, it can increase the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.”

All grades of the Model Y are included in the recall and owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Tesla Motors Australia in writing.

For reference, more than 12,000 Tesla Model Ys have been sold here so far in 2025.

The department says if your Model Y is running software version 2025.26.6 or later, your vehicle is not subject to this issue, adding you can confirm your vehicle’s software version by tapping 'Controls' > 'Software’ on the touchscreen.
