Benz undercuts Genesis, Porsche with new EQE electric sedan pricing

The EQE will sit under the similarly styled EQS in Benz’s growing EV line-up.

Mercedes-Benz has undercut the starting price of its two main rivals with its new EQE electric sedan.

The sleek saloon is on sale from today, and will sit under the recently launched S-Class-sized EQS in Benz’s growing electric vehicle line-up.

It will be initially offered in three model grades from launch, starting with the rear-wheel drive EQE 300 from $134,900 before on-road costs.

That increases to $154,900 for the all-wheel drive EQE 350 4Matic and the range tops out at $214,900 for the performance-focused Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4Matic+.

The opening price puts some air between the EQE and a couple of other similarly sized premium electric sedans.

The Porsche Taycan rear-wheel drive starts from $158,100, while the Genesis Electrified G80 is priced at $145,000 for the single-grade model.

Interestingly, Mercedes has kept pricing roughly in line with the internal combustion E-Class, which is a similar size. The plug-in hybrid E-Class E300e is priced from $130,900, just $4000 less than the entry grade EQE 300.

The EQE 300 is a single-motor rear-wheel drive offering with an 89kWh battery, with the all-electric powertrain delivering 180kW of power and 550Nm of torque.

Benz says it has a driving range of 626km on the forgiving NEDC standard, and it can dash from zero to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds.

As well as the latest version of the MBUX multimedia system with augmented reality overlay, the EQE 300 comes with a head-up display, personalised driver displays using a fingerprint scanner, wireless device charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Burmester 3D surround sound system, AMG Line interior with heated and power adjustable sports seats, and a panoramic sunroof.

Safety wise it comes with active lane change and lane keeping assist, auto emergency braking, and Benz’s self-steering, adaptive cruise control system that keeps the vehicle centred in the lane and following the vehicle ahead.

Stepping up to the EQE 350 4Matic nets buyers an extra motor on the front axle for all-wheel drive traction, allowing for outputs of 215kW and 765Nm. That’s enough to propel it from 0-100km/h in 6.3 seconds and it has a 590km NEDC range.

Topping the range is the EQE 53 4Matic+ flagship, which dials up the power and torque to 460kW and 950N, allowing for a 500km NEDC range and a blistering 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds.

Additional standard gear in the AMG model includes air suspension, rear-axle steering, an AMG exterior and interior package with Nappa leather seats, and it also comes with a Vehicle Protection Plus package consisting of collision detection, stolen vehicle assistance and emergency key deactivation.

Calling out the make and model of every single car he saw as a toddler might have challenged his parents’ patience, but it was clearly a starting point for Tim Nicholson’s journey into automotive journalism. Tim launched the program, Fender Bender, on community radio station JOY 94.9 during completion of his Master of Arts (Media and Communications). This led to an entry role at industry publication GoAuto, before eventually taking the role of Managing Editor. A stint as RACV’s Motoring Editor – including being an Australia’s Best Cars judge – provided a different perspective to automotive media, before leading him to CarsGuide where he started as a Contributing Journalist in September 2021, and transitioned to Senior Editor in April 2022, before becoming Managing Editor in December 2022.
