Ford Australia has confirmed that 700 examples of the limited-edition Mustang Bullitt will be coming to Australia in October, priced from $73,688 plus on-road costs.

Its price is $10,698 dearer than the manual GT Fastback on which it is based, but it is $1021 less than the range-topping GT Convertible auto that is priced at $74,709.

Inspired by the movie Bullitt from 1968, the new version is distinguished by Bullitt badging, a darkened front grille, unique 'Dark Highland Green' paintwork, gloss-black 19-inch 'Torq Thrust' wheels and a beefed-up version of the Mustang's 5.0-litre V8 powerplant.

The on-sale date coincides with the 50th anniversary of the release of the movie Bullitt, which hit cinemas on October 17, 1968.

While US-spec versions will be offered with a Shadow Black hue, Australian versions will only be available in green.

Ford's spanner-turners have tuned the Bullitt's V8 to produce 345kW/556Nm, a 6kW boost over the GT, with all 700 examples teamed exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission as a nod to the 1968 Steve McQueen-driven original.

The power boost has been achieved thanks to an open air induction and intake manifold with 87mm throttle bodies, Ford Racing air filter and a powertrain control module that is shared with the Shelby Mustang GT350.

Drive, steering and exhaust functions can all be adaptively programmed, while the 'MagneRide' damping system is included as standard.

Unique interior specification includes Bullitt scuff plates, green-stitched dash, door trims and heated and cooled front seating, 12.0-inch digital instrument cluster borrowed from the Ford GT, white cue ball gear shifter and unique boot. Sporty Recaro performance seats are available as an option.

Each Mustang Bullitt will also come with a plaque on the passenger side which is etched with the vehicle’s unique build number.
