How safe is the new GWM Tank 300 hybrid?

The Tank 300 hybrid 4x4 scores five stars from ANCAP, with only a couple of notable deductions.

The GWM Tank 300, which launched in Australia earlier this month, has been awarded a maximum five-star rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

Marking the final result to be published in 2023, the GWM Tank 300 hybrid 4X4 scored consistently well across ANCAP’s four categories.

In Adult Occupant Protection, the Tank 300 scored 88 per cent, putting it not far behind one of the overall safest vehicles of the year according to ANCAP, the Lexus NX, which scored  per cent in that category.

For Child Occupant Protection, its 89 per cent is exactly on par with some of the safest vehicles tested in 2022, while its 81 per cent for the Vulnerable Road User is adequate.

ANCAP does however specify its impressive scoring was marked down slightly “by the maximum 4.00 point penalty for vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility as the front structure of the Tank 300 was shown to pose a high risk to the occupants of an oncoming vehicle, if struck”.

The Tank 300 was awarded 85 per cent for its Safety Assist systems, including active safety and collision avoidance, just slightly behind the bar for some of the best performing cars.

“This safety rating for the Tank 300 rounds out our testing for the year, and adds another five-star performer into the GWM stable and importantly, the Australia new vehicle fleet,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg.

“2023 will see a number of new and updated aspects introduced into our test and rating regime, further enhancing the safety of new cars offered to Australian and New Zealand consumers.”

The GWM Tank 300 launched in December 2022 with its entry level Lux variant, starting from $55,990 drive-away, while another slightly better equipped variant called Ultra is available from $60,990 drive-away.
