Nissan is going on an electric SUV bonanza.

Recent reports from Japanese outlet Best Car, which is known for its well placed sources in the country’s auto industry, has said the Skyline name will return but as an electric SUV.

The outlet reports the Skyline SUV will sit above the brand’s current Ariya electric car, and will be a similar size to seven-seat SUVs such as the Toyota Kluger.

The rebooted Skyline could borrow tech from the recently announced Ariya Nismo.

That car uses two electric motors to make 320kW and 600Nm and provides all-wheel drive grip.

Anything wearing the Skyline badge would need similar if not greater performance than that to live up to its storied history.

Best Car has put 2026 as the arrival date for the new SUV, as the current Skyline is expected to be built until next year.

New renders from the magazine show a swoopy silhouette and floating roof with a more aggressive front end than seen on most electric cars.

This is paired with sharp, dynamic LED lighting and well-sized alloy wheels.

If Nissan applies the Skyline name to an SUV it could lead to the nameplate returning to Australia with the brand committed to bolstering its electric car line-up.

Nissan Australia boss Andrew Humberstone has previously said the company will launch 11 new models by 2027 with a healthy dose of battery power among them.

Nissan has form converting its conventional passenger car names to EVs and SUVs, too.

The Nissan Leaf electric hatchback will return as an SUV and the Nissan Micra is believed to be on the way back as a micro electric hatch.

Nissan hasn’t confirmed any of the reports on the Skyline revival but has previously said solid state batteries are the key to the future of its performance cars.

The brand showcased a future electric GT-R with its Hyper Force Concept at the 2023 Tokyo motor show.

This vehicle will need solid state batteries to come to fruition, though,

Solid state batteries are lighter, more energy dense, quicker charging and less fire prone than current cells.

Nissan has slated 2028 as the year they’ll fit the futuristic battery tech to its cars.
