Safe and sound-less! 2023 Mercedes EQE electric car scores high marks in 'Safe and Green' testing

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has awarded the Mercedes-Benz EQE a five-star rating, as the large electric car becomes the second in its category to be tested as such.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE scored well as one of more than 60 electric cars to be tested by ANCAP, and joins the Tesla Model S as the only other electric large sedan to be tested - the latter back in 2015.

ANCAP said the Mercedes EQE was awarded the second highest score under ANCAP's most recent testing scheme (2020-2022) for the Adult Occupant Protection category at 95 per cent, the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 6 both top it at equal first of 97 per cent.

It also equalled the second-highest score for Child Occupant Protection with 92 per cent, the models above it scoring 93 per cent.

The EQE specifically scored full marks for its “ability to detect and react to a standing or walking pedestrian when reversing" thanks to its AEB backover function, and it scored highly for its “protection offered to vulnerable road users, and its collision avoidance capability".

In its lane-keeping test, the EQE scored an 'adequate' mark.

ANCAP has lately pushed for its testing to remain a priority as car brands shift focus to emission reductions in a campaign it calls Safe and Green.

ANCAP said the Mercedes EQE was awarded the second highest score under ANCAP’s most recent testing scheme (2020-2022) for the Adult Occupant Protection category at 95 per cent.

"Continuing the marque's safe and green credentials, the Mercedes-Benz EQE offers another safe and green option," said ANCAP Chief Executive Carla Hoorweg.

"ANCAP's Safe and Green guide is designed to help consumers easily compare the safety of alternative-powered models - and with over 60 current models holding a five-star ANCAP safety rating, there are plenty of options."
